As I think about this question, it becomes apparent that I have never thought about this. I feel that my family is what drives me the most. It's not because my parents are pushing me to become a doctor. I have been pushing for that myself since middle school. I want to set high standards and a good example for my siblings so that they can see where I'm going and push themselves to be very good in whatever they do.
Today, I am a student at MCNY with many other credits from various colleges. I attended Northeastern University for a 3 semesters, then transferred to Bronx Community College because I did not to take out large loans. I stayed at BCC for a semester only to find that some of the credits I earned would not be recognized by medical schools because they were earned at a community college. I decided I would transfer from that school and eventually stumbled upon Metropolitan College of New York.
Currently, I am contributing to my community by bringing science into virtually all the New York City communities. I am doing this through a program called the Harlem Children Society. This program goes to high schools all over NYC and provides students with mentors, a stipend, connections with other students that are interested in science or engineering, and the chance to do real scientific research. We also have a street fair every year in Harlem (on 125th st and 7th ave). During the fair, the students take all the work and research they did during the summer and show it to people in the community, which gives them the opportunity to teach the community themselves.
I order to understand and appreciate people more, I want to continue working with the Harlem Children Society program. I have been with the program for 6 years, starting as a student and now a staff member. I have also mentored 10 students with some research work I have done in previous years. If and when I become a doctor, I would gladly become a mentor for a few students in this program and teach them what every they would need to know about getting into medical school or even scientific research.
